Metropolitan police hat
Created on
20 March 2018
  • In the year to the end of February 2018 there were 4,279 more domestic abuse offences and 1,300 more rape offences recorded by the Met than in the previous year.[2] The Deputy Commissioner recently said that the reasons for the increase in these types of offences is not fully understood.[3]
  • There has been a 26 per cent rise in knife crime in London – in the year to February 2018 there were 14,750 knife crime offences, compared to 11,701 the previous year.[4] The number of knife crime with injury victims under 25 in the year to February 2018 was 7 per cent higher compared to the previous year.[5]
  • There have been ‘notable increases’ in burglary offences in Havering (up 57.8 per cent), Redbridge (up 54 per cent) and Hammersmith (up 56.3 per cent): all are among the boroughs that have prioritised burglary as requiring “concerted action”. Similarly, theft from the person in Camden has increased by 149.2 per cent.[6]

The Mayor’s policing plan was published last year, so what progress has been made in terms of delivering his commitments?

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will tomorrow hold a question and answer session on the Mayor’s Police and Crime Plan with Sir Craig Mackey QPM, Deputy Commissioner, Metropolitan Police and Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). Topics for discussion include:

  • Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls
  • Keeping children and young people safe
  • Tackling volume crime
  • Hatred, intolerance and extremism

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 21 March 2018 from 10:00am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend
