Preparing London for the risks of climate change

A view of the Shard, London
Created on
29 September 2021

The effects of climate change on London have been very evident in recent years.

In August this year, the capital faced 50 flooding incidents caused by heavy rain. The UK also had its ninth hottest summer on record with temperatures reaching a peak of 32.2°C at Heathrow on 20th July.

Concerns have been raised that current Mayoral powers and funding may not be sufficient to meet climate change targets and protect Londoners from climate risks.

Tomorrow, the Environment Committee will investigate how prepared London is for the risks that climate change brings to the capital.

The guests are:

  • Professor Jason Lowe OBE, Head of Climate Services, Met Office
  • Alex Nickson, Wastewater Systems Strategy Manager, Thames Water
  • Charlotte Wood, London Area Director, Environment Agency
  • Lilli Matson, Chief Safety, Health and Environment Office, Transport for London (TfL)
  • Peter Daw, Assistant Director for Environment and Energy, and Head of Climate Change, Greater London Authority (GLA)
  • Vicky Boorman, London Borough of Hillingdon & Co-Chair of the London Drainage Engineers Group (LoDEG)
  • Chris Lee, Director of Environment & Regeneration, London Borough of Merton
  • Councillor Johnny Thalassites, Lead Member for Planning, Place and Environment, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea
  • Patricia Cuervo, Senior Flood & Water Management Office, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 30 September 2021 from 10am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be watched live here.
