London’s renewable energy future

Solar panels on rooftop
Created on
18 July 2022

The Mayor has set a target to supply 100 per cent of Transport for London’s energy from renewable power, and 15 per cent of London’s overall energy from renewable, local sources by 2030.

Most of London’s energy requirements are met by gas or electricity, with heat and hot water needs supplied by the gas grid and boilers, and electricity supplied by the electricity grid, which is usually generated in power stations outside the capital.[2]

London faces a number of challenges in increasing its share of energy supply from renewable energy sources and the Mayor has stated that the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have exacerbated global energy prices, and have made it more challenging to procure long-term energy contracts.

So how is the Mayor addressing these challenges? What more should the Mayor do to help transition the city and Londoners’ homes and businesses towards renewable energy in order to meet Net Zero?

The Environment Committee will tomorrow scrutinise the Mayor and the wider GLA Group’s role in increasing renewable energy supply, like solar. Questions around London Power, the Mayor’s green energy company, will also feature in the discussion.

The guests are:

  • Catherine Barber, Assistant Director, Environment and Energy, Greater London Authority (GLA)
  • Chetan Lad, Interim Head of Energy, GLA
  • Dale Vince OBE, Founder, Ecotricity
  • Syed Ahmed OBE, Director, Energy for London

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 19 July 2022 from 10.00am and will take place virtually.

The meeting can be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube
