27 per cent of households in London are now private renters, compared with 19 per cent nationally.[2] With the scale and expansion, focus has been placed on standards and tenant rights within the sector.
The Private Rented Sector (PRS) has the worst conditions of any tenure in housing, with homes less likely to comply with minimum safety standards and properties more likely to be classified as non-decent.
Shelter has recently recorded a 35 per cent increase amongst private renters contacting them for advice about poor living conditions.[3] 35 per cent of private renters say their housing situation made it harder to cope with lockdowns and 21 per cent had suffered with damp, mould, condensation, poor insultation or excess cold within the previous month.[4]
The London Assembly Housing Committee will discuss issues within the PRS, including quality and standards, enforcement and the powers of redress available to tenants. What more can the Mayor of London do to support London’s private renters?
The guests are:

- Vicky Pearlman, PRS Programme Manager, GLA

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 22 March 2022 from 10.00am at The Chamber, City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
