If disaster strikes – how will London fare?

Created on
21 November 2018

As a world city with a large and mobile population, London is particularly vulnerable to disruption in the face of a catastrophic event which threatens life or property.

These large-scale dangers include:

  • Infectious diseases, such as pandemic flu
  • Extreme weather, such as drought and flooding
  • Terrorist attack
  • Chemical or radioactive leaks

London co-ordinates its response through the London Resilience Partnership. The LRP comprises more than 170 organisations with responsibilities for assessing risk and planning for emergencies.

The London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will tomorrow examine London’s resilience and emergency planning arrangements.

The following guests will attend:

From 2.00pm

  • Steve Apter, Deputy Commissioner, Director of Safety and Assurance, London Fire Brigade
  • John Hetherington, Head of London Resilience
  • Fiona Twycross AM, Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience and Chair of London Resilience Forum

From 3.00pm

  • Ven Luke Miller, Archdeacon of London, and Chair of Faith Sector Panel, London Resilience
  • Simon Moody, Area Director London, Environment Agency
  • Emma Spragg, Director for London, Independent Living & Crisis Response, British Red Cross and Chair of Voluntary Sector Panel, London Resilience
  • Doug Patterson, Chief Executive, London Borough of Bromley

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 22 November at 2pm in the Chamber, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast and our YouTube channel.
