How will Mayor fund the fight against crime?

Police tackling serious violent crime
Created on
10 December 2018

Violent crime has become one of the dominant issues of the year. In response, the Mayor has pledged high-profile enforcement in the short-term and, in the longer term, he wants a programme to tackle the culture in which crime takes root.

But all this takes money - and the Met is operating in a climate of ever-tightening budgets[1].

How can the Mayor reconcile the need for a stronger police presence and the need to cut the money that helps keep officers on the streets?

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will discuss the proposed draft GLA budget for 2019-20 covering the Met Police and London Fire Brigade.

The guests are:

Police

  • Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, MOPAC
  • Siobhan Peters, Chief Financial Officer, MOPAC
  • Sir Stephen House, QPM, Assistant Commissioner, MPS
  • Lynda McMullan, Director of Commercial and Finance, MPS
  • David Gallie, Assistant Director of Finance, GLA (both panels)

Fire

  • Fiona Twycross AM, Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience
  • Dany Cotton QFSM, London Fire Commissioner
  • Sue Budden, Director of Corporate Service, London Fire Brigade

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 11 December from 10am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast or on our YouTube channel.
