How is the Mayor tackling health inequalities in London?

Healthy Streets
Created on
21 January 2020

The Mayor has a statutory duty to produce a Health Inequalities Strategy for London. In the strategy, the Mayor states that he wants “a healthier, fairer city, where nobody’s health suffers because of who they are or where they live.”

How is the Mayor tackling London’s health inequalities? Since the publication of the Mayor’s implementation plan in 2018, what progress has been made in:

  • Child nutrition and tackling childhood obesity
  • Improving the mental health of Londoners particularly in low-paid or low quality work
  • Creating healthy streets and places in London’s new developments
  • Loneliness and social isolation among older Londoners
  • Smoking, drug and alcohol misuse and gambling?

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Health Committee will get an update on the Mayor’s Health Inequalities Strategy, the progress made to date and what more needs to be done.

The guests are:

  • Dr Tom Coffey, Mayoral Health Advisor
  • Professor Paul Plant, Interim Statutory Health Advisor to the Mayor and Public Health England, London Region Director
  • Dr Neil Churchill, Director of Experience, Participation and Equalities, NHS England
  • Dr Vin Diwakar, Regional Medical Director for London, NHS England
  • Dr Jessica Allen, Deputy Director, UCL Institute of Health Equity
  • Dr Nicole Klynman, Public Health Consultant, City and Hackney

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 22 January at 2:00pm in Committee Room 5, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
