Is it feasible for housing and industrial activity to co-exist in certain locations?
In a bustling city like London, it is important to ensure a sufficient stock of land and premises meets current and future demand for different types of industrial uses. From makers to mechanics, the range is wide and the nature of industry is changing. These uses include:
- 'Dark kitchens'
- Film and TV set, prop and other design making
- Printers
- Logistics
- Warehousing and distribution
- Recycling industries (circular economy)
- Renewable electricity plants
- Data centres and land for other utilities
- Transport functions
Demand for workspace is at an all-time high and so is demand for housing. Can they coexist and what are the design challenges? With the rapid loss of industrial land where is the move-on space? What will be the impact of this month's rule-change allowing light industry to become residential overnight - and without planning permission?
Is it necessary to rethink City planning policy to protect employment–in the face of growing demand for housing?
The London Assembly Planning Committee will tomorrow consider the issues involved in managing the demand for industrial land in London.
The following guests will attend:
- Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, GLA

- Harry Read, Asset Management and Acquisitions Associate, Capital Industrial
