The next Mayor of London and London Assembly elections will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024, a date which may coincide with a General Election.
Election Bill amendments currently before Parliament could result in the 2024 Mayoral election being ‘first past the post’ for the first time ever, with the ‘second-preference vote’ removed.
The Bill is expected to receive royal assent in May this year.
For the 2024 elections, a manual count rather than an electronic count is therefore being considered by the Greater London Returning Officer. A decision needs to be made by the end of March - speed and efficiency along with costs savings are all factors being considered.
The GLA Oversight Committee will tomorrow discuss potential changes to the counting arrangements at the next GLA Elections in 2024.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 12 January from 10.00am, in Rooms G02 – G03 – G04, LFB Headquarters (Union Street, SE1 0LL).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube
