Can resident-led regeneration help estates like Grenfell to heal?

The fire in the Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017 left a community in shock. In the aftermath, residents said they had felt disenfranchised from decisions that affected their neighbourhood. This time, they want more of a say in the rebuilding of their community.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is now engaged in a refurbishment of the Lancaster West Estate, home of the tower.

The London Assembly Regeneration Committee will tomorrow (Wednesday, 5 September) ask how communities can be supported to rebuild, not just physically, but emotionally as well. The investigation will explore other schemes where residents have co-designed their neighbourhoods and will ask if grass-roots participation has a role in helping a community to recover from the shock of an event like the Grenfell fire.

The following guests have been invited to the meeting:

  • Callum West, Head of Assistance Centres, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
  • James Caspell, Neighbourhood Director for Lancaster West, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
  • Doug Goldring, Director of Housing Management, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
  • Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith, Deputy Leader, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
  • Cllr Robert Atkinson, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
  • Louise Duggan, Area Manager, NW Regeneration Team, Greater London Authority

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 5 September at 2:00pm in The Chamber, at City Hall

(The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast or on our YouTube channel.
