Are traditional minicabs close to extinction?

Traffic on Tower Bridge
Created on
11 March 2019
  • There are 113,645 Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) drivers registered in London – almost twice as many as in 2013/14.
  • They operate in an increasingly competitive environment, meaning many are solely focussed on survival.
  • TfL has introduced a range of tests and charges, including the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and has removed the Congestion Charge exemption.
  • The Licensed Private Hire Car Association claims 20,000 jobs are now at risk from the language test alone.

Small minicab operations provide a vital local service, especially in Outer London. They connect people to key transport hubs, provide safe transport for night-time workers and take vulnerable people door-to-door on essential journeys to hospital appointments and the shops.

The London Assembly Economy Committee will tomorrow examine if small, local minicab operations still have a viable future, caught between the Mayor’s quest to clean up the capital’s toxic air and the explosion of app-based services.

The meeting will be in two parts:

Roundtable discussion – 10.00am to 11.30am

  • With 13 guests from trade associations and representatives from minicab and private hire companies.

Discussion with TfL – 11.30am to 12.30pm

With guests:

  • Graham Robinson, General Manager, Taxi and Private Hire, TfL
  • Christina Calderato, Head of Delivery Planning, TfL

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 12 March at 10.00am in The Chamber, at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast or on our YouTube channel.
