On May 7, 2020, the GLA elections for the Mayor of London and London Assembly Members will take place. There are three different ‘contests’ that make up GLA elections – and three different ballot papers for voters:
- the Mayor of London
- the 14 Members of the London Assembly who represent London’s 14 Constituencies
- the 11 Assembly Members who represent the whole of London (London-wide Members)
Chief Officer of the GLA, Mary Harpley, will act as the Greater London Returning Officer (GLRO) and will be responsible for overseeing the three contests, including the preparations for the poll and the counting of the votes. The GLRO is appointed by the Mayor but acts and takes decisions independently of the GLA – she will be supported by a dedicated team drawn from the London boroughs and from within the GLA.
The GLA Oversight Committee meets tomorrow to consider issues including:
- How the elections are proposed to be managed, key milestones and risks
- The size of the budget and key personnel and what staff will be needed from within the GLA
- Promotion and marketing, in particular around voter registration
- The count process and what the GLRO can do to learn the lessons from 2016 and ensure that the result is delivered in a smooth and timely fashion
The following guests will appear:
- Mary Harpley, Chief Officer of the GLA and Greater London Returning Officer
- Alex Conway, Deputy Greater London Returning Officer
- Lea Goddard, Senior Elections Programme Manager
The meeting will take place on Thursday, 15 November from 10am in The Chamber, at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
