Across London there is a significant shortfall in the number of local authority "in house" foster carers to meet the needs of London's growing population of looked after children. Recent estimates show that across London an additional 1000 households are needed which reflects the national picture of a shortage of 7,600 homes. The issue is more acute in London primarily due to very high house prices meaning many households who may wish to foster or who wish to foster more than one child cannot because of a lack of available spare rooms - which is a prerequisite for any foster...

In recent weeks there has been a focus on Children's mental health, with studies indicating that state of the mental health of looked-after children is significantly poorer than that of their peers, with almost half of children and young people in care meeting the criteria for a psychiatric disorder. Children in care and care leavers are more likely to experience poor health, educational and social outcomes.
