The Night Time Economy and Women's Safety

  • Reference: 2018/0938
  • Question by: Len Duvall OBE
  • Meeting date: 22 March 2018
Will the Mayor look into best practice proposed by the Her Centre, a provider of sexual and domestic violence advocacy and support in Greenwich, which recommends that licenses for late night venues should be conditional on written policies for dealing with complaints of sexual harassment, as well as providing annual training, so that women enjoying a night out and/or working in London's Night Time Economy can do so in an environment free from sexual harassment and assault? Will the Mayor also join me in calling on government to strengthen national licensing regulations to reflect this best practice?

  • Reference: 2018/0902
  • Question by: Florence Eshalomi MP
  • Meeting date: 22 March 2018
I recently met with the St. Giles Trust which has been working jointly with the Trauma Centre at the Royal London Hospital supporting young victims of weapons crime and serious youth violence. The aim of the scheme is to help victims leave behind gang activity, including gang-related violence, and avoid repercussions such as reprisal violence. Of 400 patients helped by the team the re-admission rate has been reduced from 45% to 1%. This amounts to as many as 176 stabbings possibly prevented and lives saved. Given the impressive outcomes of this scheme, managed by only two caseworkers, would the Mayor...

Syphilis diagnoses in London

  • Reference: 2018/0914
  • Question by: Onkar Sahota
  • Meeting date: 22 March 2018
Public Health England data shows that Syphilis cases in England have reached the highest level since 1949 - 5,920 cases in 2016, almost double the number in 2012. Of the total diagnoses, 2,915 happened in London, with wide disparities in diagnostic rates by 100,000 people within Boroughs. This shows a breakdown of commissioning of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in London, and the need for a pan-London strategy to fight syphilis and other STIs. Given your public health responsibilities, will you take this matter to the London Health Board?
