Post Office closures (Supplementary) [3]

  • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
I think I do have a right to reply to a personal comment like that in this meeting. I think if Mr Tuffrey had continued reading that letter out, it would have been made apparent that I have recently met the Royal Mail' I have a right of reply under Standing Orders to a personal attack made in this Assembly, and I think I made it absolutely clear that I had recently met Royal Mail in Kennington and taken up the issues of poor service standards in Kennington, because in addition to the post office closures, I think many Londoners...

Post Office closures (Supplementary) [2]

  • Question by: Angie Bray
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
Can I also just draw your attention to the possibility that Kensington and Chelsea is considering funding one of their local residents taking the Post Office to judicial review over the closing of one of the post offices in Kensington. I wonder whether that is something you would like to support and perhaps you would like to'

Post Office closures (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Bob Blackman
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
Mr Mayor, I offer you an opportunity. Within my constituency, in Harrow, there is a proposal by the Post Office, to close nine post offices, at the moment, which has just finished its consultation. Here is an ideal opportunity to make a direct approach ' and I welcome your suggestion to take some direct approach in this regard ' to actually stop the Post Office from ceasing service to high numbers of vulnerable people, and I think that is something that we clearly need to take some action on and clearly need some positive lead from yourself as the Mayor.

  • Question by: Elizabeth Howlett

It leaves you and Liverpool Council in a bit of a limbo does it not? Do you feel like throwing in the towel?

Public Health Powers (Supplementary) [5]

  • Question by: Elizabeth Howlett
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
You are saying you cannot do any more, then?

Public Health Powers (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Damian Hockney
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
I thoroughly agree with you, myself an avid non-smoker, have never smoked, never liked it. I do think it is a matter of freedom of choice. I do think the individual restaurants and bars should be allowed, and I think my question really is, the Scottish police have said they will not be in a position to enforce the ban in Scotland when it comes in ' next year or whatever ' to the Scottish Parliament. Are we seriously saying that we are going to get to a situation where people' and there are a lot of problems in Ireland...

Public Health Powers (Supplementary) [3]

  • Question by: Jennette Arnold OBE
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
I am glad that you have recognised in your answer that we have moved a great distance. When you think that 30 years ago, in my experience, people were smoking in hospital wards, and the blessed Women's Royal Voluntary Service used to sell cigarettes, that we have moved a great distance, and that it is only a matter of time before we get a smoke-free London. Until that time, will you, again, use your influence to ensure that any work that this Assembly does in terms of the next couple of months to ensure that we feed in to the...

Public Health Powers (Supplementary) [2]

  • Question by: Elizabeth Howlett
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
Do you think that the fact that Dr (John) Reid (Secretary of State for Health) has ruled out any suggestion that you should have powers related to your smoking ban in London means that Government has no confidence in you in public life in London?

Public Health Powers (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Elizabeth Howlett
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
I absolutely agree with you, because I am an avid non-smoker, so maybe I am not quite following along my party line. You are not giving whole-hearted support to the Government's mish-mashed proposals now.

Highway powers (Supplementary) [9]

  • Question by: Roger Evans
  • Meeting date: 17 November 2004
Can you provide us with a list or a map of those roads, so that local people will know clearly who is responsible for what is going on which parts of their road network, because it is confusing enough at the moment?
