Mayor's Opening Statement (Supplementary) [5]

  • Question by: Len Duvall OBE
  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
Mr Mayor, just looking at the economic downturn issues, I do have a degree of sympathy with some of the issues you said about the media recording some of the issues in London. Can I go to the London First letter that was sent to you saying there were serious misgivings about the progress in addressing the economic downturn. What do you think that was about, then, and why do you think they sent that letter to you?

  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
Can I welcome the appointment of Pam Chesters as your youth and health adviser. Many of us have worked very closely with Pam - a distinguished constituent of mine - for a number of years. But, Mr Mayor, I do not think we have seen the letter of appointment yet on the Assembly. Is this somewhere in the ether?

  • Question by: Richard Tracey
  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
Mr Mayor, I noticed some rather strident comments reported in the press yesterday about the Chief Executive's excellent analysis of Organising for Delivery which you mentioned earlier. Should we not all remember, you and us on this side of the Chamber, the overwhelming victory which the London public gave us for the manifesto which you produced which did indeed promise a slimmed down and a considerably slimmed down City Hall? That is important and I think should be seen in the light of those strident comments made yesterday. Would you agree with that?

  • Question by: Tony Arbour
  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
In Twickenham, Mr Mayor, on Saturday, after our great victory in the Calcutta Cup, the town was festooned with St George's flags and Union flags except on the Town Hall. Twickenham is the home of English rugby and when it suits the administration - the Liberal Democrat administration - in Twickenham it is happy to boast about it, but it is ashamed to fly St George's flag. Indeed it is the only borough between City Hall and Hampton Court which does not fly the Union flag at all except, I am happy to say, on the Queen's birthday. Do you...

  • Question by: Caroline Pidgeon
  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
I wanted to pick up on the point about tourism that you touched on earlier. Is not part of the problem of attracting visitors to London our confusing system of fares and ticketing to try to find best value? Could you tell a visitor what the cost of a one day travel card is to help them see the tourist sites in London?

Opening Statement (Supplementary) [3]

  • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
  • Meeting date: 25 February 2009
Good morning Mr Mayor. Do you not think it extraordinary and unwise not to mention the resignation of Tim O'Toole [Managing Director, London Underground] this morning in your update? Can I put on record the deep appreciation of the Labour Group - and I hope the [Assembly's] Transport Committee - of the work of Tim O'Toole in grappling with the dilapidation of the Underground and also doing such a tremendous job of professional leadership during the July [2005] bombings in London. I think all Londoners appreciated how well London Underground staff, led by Tim O'Toole, performed that day. Mayor, does...

  • Question by: Richard Tracey
  • Meeting date: 25 February 2009
Thank you, Chair. Mr Mayor, can I associate myself with your remarks on both Tim O'Toole and also on the East London Line extension, which is of course very much welcomed in my constituency in Clapham around Clapham Junction but also across the whole of south London. What I particularly want to ask you about now, though, on railway matters, is the round table discussion you promised with the Association of Train Operating Companies because still the question mark looms over all of us of exactly when Oyster Pay As You Go is going to be applied to all of...

  • Question by: Caroline Pidgeon
  • Meeting date: 25 February 2009
I wanted to pick up something the Mayor had mentioned. It is nothing to do with the personal issues but, in terms of Tim O'Toole's departure, can you confirm that this is nothing to do with the publication of the report by the National Audit Office which is due out shortly into the handling of the financial crisis at Metronet?

Great spaces (Supplementary) [5]

  • Question by: Kit Malthouse
  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
When I was a councillor we were persuaded by officers to spend many hundreds of thousands of pounds, if not millions of pounds, on textured paving throughout Westminster to cater to the concerns of the blind and deaf blind lobby. However, on asking the question as to how many blind and deaf blind people had been run over, killed or involved in road traffic accidents in the previous five years the answer came back as zero, we decided, on the evidence, that maybe our rush to put in textured paving was not actually merited. I would encourage you and ask...

Great spaces (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Steve O'Connell
  • Meeting date: 25 March 2009
You will be aware I was in Cannes last week when you made the announcement of the spaces. Boris Johnson (Mayor of London): Exactly. Steve O'Connell (AM): As someone who had a public meeting in Coulsdon in the south of Croydon only last week when the local residents were very unhappy that they had never had any sight of their promised open space over eight years, it will be good for them to realise that -- I believe there is a basic misunderstanding again on the other side as to how you are going to bring this to bear. It...
