In our response to the consultation, we stress that any fares and ticketing strategy must be based on a realistic assessment of what passengers require in terms of cost, security and access.
Our Transport Committee’s response to the Department for Transport’s (DfT) current review of fares and ticketing highlights relevant portions from the Committee’s previous work, including its reports The Future of Ticketing (Nov 2011) and The Big Squeeze: Rail overcrowding in London (Feb 2009).
The Committee believes the principles aimed at protecting passengers’ interests set out in the Future of Ticketing report should underpin any new fares and ticketing policy, along with addition guarantees to give passengers greater control over their expenditure.
The Committee’s response also touches on the use of smart cards and using fares to make better use of capacity, for example by making off-peak travel more attractive.
