Our Environment Committee has written to the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) about the particular areas it hopes to see covered in the OPLC’s forthcoming sustainability policy.
These areas include:
- Maintaining and possibly raising sustainability targets set by the ODA for the construction process so that environmental standards will continue to improve across the construction industry.
- Striving for low-carbon sustainable homes – exceeding the standards of the time - to be built at the Olympic Park, rather than those just complying with minimum standards.
- More information about lower-carbon energy generation, including waste gasification, organic waste digestion and hydrogen from water.
- Given concerns about potential soil and groundwater contamination, the policy should provide detail about the site’s condition, with particular reference to food growing.
The Committee also said it will be important to address how the OPLC’s sustainability aspirations will move from policy to practice – how they will be embodied organisationally, managed, monitored and reported, resourced, and driven down the supply chain.
The London Legacy Development Corporation has responded to the Committee.
