Will the Metropolitan Police Service make any changes to its delivery of the anti-terror Prevent programme in the wake of the William Shawcross review?
The review found that the government’s Prevent programme is not doing enough to tackle “non-violent Islamist extremism” and made 34 recommendations for reform, which have all been accepted by the government [1].
Prevent is one of the four key themes of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to safeguard people from radicalisation and prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the review of Prevent and what the Metropolitan Police is doing in response. The guests are:
- Dame Lynne Owens, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service
- Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime
- Diana Luchford CB, Chief Executive Officer, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)
Other topics in the session include:
- The Metropolitan Police Turnaround Plan – investment and resources
- Police recruitment and training
- Safer Schools Officers
- Economic crime/money laundering
The meeting will take place on Wednesday 22 February 2023 from 10am, in The Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
