Q&A with Met Police on Coronation policing

London Metropolitan Police vehicles
Created on
06 June 2023

The Metropolitan Police made 64 arrests on the day of the Coronation of King Charles III, with 52 people arrested related to concerns that they were planning to disrupt the event, including 28 Just Stop Oil protestors.

Operation Golden Orb, the policing operation for the Coronation, was one of the largest security operations the Met has led.

Over 29,000 police officers were deployed in the week leading up to the Coronation and over the bank holiday weekend, with more than 11,500 officers on duty on the day.

Following criticism for some of the arrests, the Mayor wrote to Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley calling for a review of the Coronation policing.

The Commissioner said the Met would be “conducting an operational review” of the policing of the Coronation and that “any lessons which come out of that will be reflected in future planning”.

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow for its monthly Q&A session to examine the policing of the Coronation with the Met and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime. Other topics include:

  • Additional Daniel Morgan documents found by the Met
  • Football policing
  • Knife violence
  • Policing dogs in public places

The guests are:

  • Louisa Rolfe OBE, Assistant Commissioner, Metropolitan Police
  • Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 7 June 2023 from 10am, in Committee Room 2&3 at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
