Following the update from Sir Mark Rowley on improving standards in the Metropolitan Police Service, Susan Hall AM, Chairman of the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee, said:
“This is a welcome update from the Commissioner, who has repeatedly reassured us he is committed to tackling issues of integrity and standards in the Metropolitan Police Service.
“It is concerning that 161 serving police officers in the Met have a criminal conviction and we trust that these cases will be reviewed robustly by the Met’s professional standards unit.
“The findings of Baroness Casey’s review of the Met were truly shocking and it is important for Londoners to see that change is being delivered quickly.
“It is promising to see that the Commissioner is determined to deliver on more suspensions, more hearings and more dismissals of those who simply should not be police officers.
“To achieve this, the Commissioner needs clearer rules which give him greater power to remove officers who are proven unfit for the role, as we recommended in our report looking at the police complaints system last year.
“We will continue to scrutinise the Commissioner and the Mayor to ensure that they reform the Met and rebuild trust among Londoners.
