Overcoming London’s barriers to housing development
What is causing London to miss its housebuilding targets, and how can the capital get back on track?
At a meeting of the London Assembly Planning and Regeneration Committee in July, housing developers and experts in the sector revealed the biggest barriers stopping new homes being built in London.
Guests identified the challenging economic context, a skills shortage in planning and construction, and delays caused by the planning system among a range of obstacles stopping enough homes being built.
On Monday, the Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and the Fire Service and a Director from the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) will be asked how they will address the issues raised by the Committee’s investigation to help deliver the homes that London needs.
The guests are:
- Jules Pipe CBE – Deputy Mayor, Planning, Regeneration and the Fire Service, Greater London Authority
- Cathy Francis – Director, New Towns, Infrastructure and Housing Delivery, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG)
- Lisa Fairmaner, Head of the London Plan and Strategic Planning, GLA
- John Wacher, Strategic Planning Manager – Viability, GLA
- Cllr James Jamieson, Expert adviser, Housebuilding in London: London Plan Review, and Councillor, Central Bedfordshire Council.
The meeting will take place on Monday 9 September from 2pm, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
