The Lord Harris Review said that the “biggest threat in the UK remains that posed by Islamist terrorism”, but also recognised new and growing dangers.
In 2020-21, 40.5 per cent of referrals to Prevent in London were classified as ‘mixed, unstable or unclear’, which can include those who hold or switch between multiple extremist ideologies, are obsessed with extreme or mass violence, or hold violently misogynistic views, such as ‘incels’ [1].
The Metropolitan Police is the lead agency responsible for coordinating the response to a terror incident in London.
How is the Met responding to both known and emerging trends in radicalisation, including extremists with mixed, unstable, or unclear ideologies?
Are front-line staff aware of the changing nature of radicalisation so they can raise concerns?
For the second of two meetings on counter-terrorism and radicalisation, the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss how prepared London’s emergency services are for a terrorist attack.
The guests are:
- Chief Supt Helen Williams, Commander for Protective Security Operations, Metropolitan Police Service
- Commander Richard Smith, Head of Counter Terrorism Command, Metropolitan Police Service
- Kenny Bowie, Director of Strategy and MPS Oversight, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)
- Oliver Levinson, Head of Countering Violent Extremism, MOPAC
- Jonathan Smith, Deputy Commissioner, London Fire Brigade
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 11 January 2023 from 10am, in The Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
