London facing accessible housing shortage

London has a shortage of accessible homes,1 and targets for building new accessible housing are not being met.2

‘Accessible housing’ refers to homes adapted or built to enable Disabled people or people with access needs, including older people, to live independently.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) predicts the capital’s need for accessible homes will increase, with an aging population and projected rises in Londoners living with conditions such as dementia or with learning difficulties.

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Housing Committee will ask experts and campaigners about the barriers to delivering more accessible affordable homes, and what more the GLA can do to help.

The guests are:

Panel 1 – 10:00-11:15

  • Laura Vicinanza, Senior Policy and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Inclusion London
  • Suzanne Iwai, Disabled co-producer living in Hammersmith & Fulham
  • Hallie Banish, Campaigns and Communications Manager, Ruils

Panel 2 – 11:25-12:45

  • Fara Muneer, Head of Business Development, Centre for Accessible Environments – Habinteg
  • Lisa Fairmaner, Head of the London Plan and Strategic Planning, GLA
  • Velvet Dibley, Senior Policy Officer (Housing), GLA
  • Kate Gordon, Senior Strategic Planner, GLA
  • Adam Driscoll, Housing Transformation Manager, London Borough of Barnet

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 24 June at 10am in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
