London - Europe’s most congested city

London was named the most congested city in Europe in INRIX’s1 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard. It found that London accounts for approximately 50 per cent of all UK traffic daily, and that in 2024 the total cost of congestion to London was £3.85 billion, averaging £942 per driver.2

Cars and taxis made up 76 per cent of motor vehicle miles in London in 2024, with light commercial vehicles making up 16 per cent and heavy goods vehicles 3 per cent.

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Transport Committee will begin its investigation into road space, driving and congestion. Considerations will include:

  • What impact is congestion having on Londoners and London’s public transport network?
  • Why are people choosing to drive over other modes of transport?
  • How does TfL assess the impact of road layout on different users and on congestion before implementing changes?
  • Is any transport user group being disproportionately impacted by current congestion or road layouts?

The guests are:

  • David Metz, Honorary Professor, UCL Centre for Transport Studies
  • Jon Parker, Managing Director, Jon Parker Consultancy
  • Antoneta Horbury, Director of Policy and Technical Affairs, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT)
  • Clare Sheffield, Director of Transport Planning, Arup

The meeting will take place on Thursday 23 October at 10am in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
