How does VAWG impact young people?
The scale of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the UK has been described as both a national emergency1 and an epidemic.2 The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) estimates that one in every twelve women in England and Wales will be a victim of VAWG each year.3
The UN defines VAWG as:
“Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.”4
Tomorrow the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will explore the levels of VAWG amongst young people, what services are available for survivors, as well as the Mayor’s VAWG strategy and prevention principles.
The guests are:
- Jain Lemom, Head of Tackling VAWG, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)
- Will Balakrishnan, Director of Commissioning and Partnerships, MOPAC
- Lib Peck, Director, Violence Reduction Unit
- DAC Alexis Boon, Metropolitan Police Service
- CS Angela Craggs, Metropolitan Police Service
The meeting will take place on Wednesday 12 March 2025 from 10am in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
