The demise of Zipcar
Zipcar is the largest car sharing operator in the UK, and in London. It’s estimated that Zipcar has about 650,000 members in the UK, and more than 550,000 of these are in London.1
On 1 December 2025 Zipcar announced its proposal to cease its UK operations at the end of December 2025, subject to formal consultation with affected employees.
News coverage of the decision suggests rising operational costs, incoming congestion charge changes and the costs of parking as contributing factors.2
But what does this decision say about the longer-term viability of car clubs in London?
The Transport Committee will hold an extraordinary meeting tomorrow with CoMoUK, TfL and the Deputy Mayor to discuss Zipcar’s announcement. The guests are:
Panel 1
- Richard Dilks, Chief Executive, CoMoUK [virtual]
Panel 2
- Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor for Transport
- Christina Calderato, Director of Transport Strategy and Policy, TfL
The meeting will take place on Tuesday 16 December at 2pm in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
