Assembly remembers road traffic victims

Today the London Assembly agreed a motion calling on Londoners to help achieve Vision Zero on the capital’s roads.

Caroline Russell AM, who seconded the motion said:

“75 people were killed on London’s roads last year, and groups like RoadPeace and Action Vision Zero make it clear that we must recognise victims as more than just shocking numbers.

“The purpose of this minute silence held each year is to make it clear to the families of road traffic victims that they are not alone and that we acknowledge the scale of their loss, grief and on-going hurt.

“Crucially, this is a reminder to us as members of the London Assembly of our responsibility to do all we can to make our roads safer for all Londoners.”

Len Duvall AM, who proposed the motion said:

“To mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims we pay tribute to the Londoners who’ve lost their lives in road traffic accidents, and the families they’ve left behind.

“Londoners who have sustained life changing injuries, and families living with the effects of serious and fatal crashes, face huge challenges.

“The Mayor’s Vison Zero initiative is achievable, but there is still work to do to get the safer streets, safer speeds and safer behaviours we need to keep Londoners out of harm’s way.

“It is important we remember those who have died or been injured on London’s roads. I am asking all Londoners to join me in doing so on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on 20 November every year.”

The full text of the motion is:

This Assembly notes the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday 20 November 2022. This Assembly notes the Vision Zero policy adopted by the Mayor in 2018 and ongoing actions to reduce road danger.

This Assembly further notes that Londoners sadly continue to be killed and injured in road traffic collisions in London.

This Assembly acknowledges the challenges faced by people who have sustained life changing injuries and the effect of serious and fatal crashes on so many families.

This Assembly calls on Londoners and everyone who can help achieve Vision Zero to join us today and every year in November in remembering the people who have died on London’s roads and their loved ones.
