Assembly to assess Mayor’s Policing nominee

The London Assembly is expected to hold a confirmation hearing on Wednesday, to assess the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s proposed appointment to the office of Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.

The Assembly’s Police and Crime Committee will meet Wednesday 23 October at 10am to determine whether it wishes to hold a confirmation hearing for the proposed candidate for the role.

If the Committee is minded to use its powers to hold a confirmation hearing, it will hold an extraordinary meeting of the Committee Wednesday 23 October at 11:30am to question:

Kaya Comer-Schwartz - Proposed appointment to the office of Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.

Questions may cover four key areas:

  1. Whether the candidate is qualified for the position
  2. Whether the candidate has the time and capacity for the position
  3. Whether the candidate is fit (independent and impartial) for the position
  4. The main responsibilities of the post and the key issues facing the organisation

Following the hearing, the Committee will make a recommendation to the Mayor as to whether it agrees or rejects the proposed appointment.1

In addition to the proposed confirmation hearing, the Committee will begin the meeting with a Q&A session with the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), focusing on recent topical issues including Notting Hill Carnival, officer confidence and the handing back of tasers and firearms.

Guests for the Q&A session (10am – 11.30am) are:

  1. Darren Mepham, Interim Chief Executive Officer, MOPAC
  2. Kenny Bowie, Head of Strategy and MPS Oversight, MOPAC

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 23 October from 10am in the Chamber, at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend – numbers may be limited.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
