Its aims are to promote and encourage in Greater London:

- an increase in the proportion of waste that is reused or recycled
- the use of methods of collection, treatment and disposal of waste that are more beneficial to the environment.1
It also can provide financial assistance for:
- the provision of facilities for or in connection with the collection, treatment or disposal of waste produced in Greater London
- conducting research into new technologies or techniques for the collection, treatment or disposal of waste
- securing, or assisting in securing, the performance of any function of a London borough council or the Common Council relating to waste.2
It also has a “statutory duty to act in accordance with the London Environment Strategy and the London Plan, with respect to the provisions, guidance and targets within these documents for municipal waste management.”3
The London Assembly will hold an extraordinary confirmation hearing on Monday, to assess the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s proposed appointment to Chair of ReLondon.

- Key responsibilities and issues for the organisation to which the Mayor is proposing to appoint the nominee
Following the hearing, the Committee will make a recommendation to the Mayor as to whether they agree or reject the proposed appointment.4
