Arson on the rise in London – what can be done?
Arson offences are on the increase in London. Cases across the capital are up 28%, with Greenwich suffering the steepest rise - up 67% over the past two years.[1]
Recent figures show that only one in 20 reported arson incidents lead to charges,[2] and news reports have suggested a link to Russia in some high-profile incidents.[3]
Tomorrow, the London Assembly Fire Committee will ask the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and experts about what is behind the increase in cases, and how the LFB is working with others to tackle the issue.
The guests are:
- Charlie Pugsley, Deputy Commissioner, Operational Director for Prevention, Protection & Policy, London Fire Brigade
- Pamela Oparaocha, Assistant Commissioner, Prevention and Protection, London Fire Brigade
- Stephen Mackenzie, Independent Fire, Security, and Resilience Consultant
The meeting will take place on Tuesday 3 June at 10am in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
