25 years of the London Assembly highlighted in Annual Report

In its 25th Anniversary year, the London Assembly has today published the 25th Anniversary edition of its Annual Report.

Covering the 2024-25 Assembly year, the report also highlights some of the biggest issues the Assembly has scrutinised on behalf of Londoners since it was formally launched in July 2000.

The publication features reflections from former Assembly Members with their thoughts on how the Assembly has made a difference to the lives of Londoners over 25 years.  It includes Assembly scrutiny of the 2012 Olympics, the 7/7 terror attacks, Crossrail (the Elizabeth Line) and more.

Highlights featured in the report include:

  • The Health Committee investigating progress towards the Mayor’s and Government’s commitments to reach the targets of zero new HIV infections, zero HIV-related stigma and zero HIV-related deaths by 2030.
  • The Police and Crime Committee examining public order policing, and its recommendations to make the Notting Hill Carnival a safer event.
  • The Fire Committee making recommendations to further strengthen the culture of London Fire Brigade.
  • The Environment Committee finding that London is not achieving the rates of change needed to meet the Mayor’s 2030 net-zero target
  • The inaugural London Youth Achievement Awards, at which eight young Londoners were recognised for the invaluable difference they have made in the capital.

Andrew Boff AM,Chair of the Assembly during 2024-25, said:

“For 25 years, the London Assembly has not only been a crucial check and balance for the country’s most powerful elected politician and his £22bn budget, but an important enabler of good Government.

“I am grateful to the many former Assembly Members who shared their memories and photos of the work they carried out on behalf of Londoners, for how they have helped shape this anniversary report.

“This report shows how the work of the Assembly is broad and varied – and the vast majority of it takes place in public, supporting greater transparency around the operation of the Mayor and the Greater London Authority.

“Having Chaired the Assembly for a third time I am confident that the Assembly will continue to address the issues that matter to Londoners.”
