Summary of request
Request:
Recently a spokesman for the Mayor of London reportedly said: "Thanks to record investment in the police, hard work of Met officers and London's Violence Reduction Unit's approach to tackling the causes of crime, the number of young people injured with knives is down since Sadiq became mayor."
- Please could you provide me with the statistics held by the Press Office or anybody within City Hall that are the basis for that statement.
Response:
The information you have requested is publicly available.
I have provided a link to the source of data used to evidence the fact in the 12-month period to May 2016 as compared to 12-month period to December 2024): knife crime with injury victims aged under 25 years (down 24%)
This data is published on public pages here:
MPS Monthly Crime Dashboard Data | London Datastore
(https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/mps-monthly-crime-dahboard-data)
Data goes back to 2012 for Total Notifiable Offence (TNO) crime, and back to 2015 for flagged crime.
Caveat around data:
Crime data is accurate at time of extraction (but may change slightly if extracted at different times). Police recorded crime is liable to change each month due to a number of factors; for example transfer to another force or reclassification.
