Can you provide evidence of all the thousands of people dying of air pollution in outer
London? Or is this a cash grab?

Our response

In 2021, the GLA commissioned research from the Environmental Research Group at Imperial College London to quantify the health burden of air pollution in London.

Imperial College’s report showed that in 2019, in Greater London, 61,800 to 70,200 life years lost (the equivalent of between 3,600 to 4,100 attributable deaths) were estimated to be attributable to anthropogenic fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

The Mayor is expanding the ULEZ across all London boroughs to tackle the triple threats of air pollution, the climate emergency and congestion.

A successful ULEZ is one that generates ever smaller income, as has been the case with the previous expansion to inner London. Any net revenue raised by the ULEZ is legally required to be reinvested into running and improving London’s transport network, such as expanding bus routes in outer London.
