Summary of request
Your request
Please can you provide all information for the financial year 2020-21, and from the start of the financial year 2021 to 31 December 2021:
- How many trees have you planted?
- How many trees have you removed, cut down or destroyed?
Our response
In the financial year 2020-21, 68,514 trees have been recorded as being planted with funding from the GLA. This includes trees planted through Mayoral tree planting programmes and grant schemes, and directly through GLA regeneration and housing schemes.
It also includes trees planted by Transport for London (TfL) on the TfL Road Network. We do not hold data related to the number of trees planted by local authorities with their own funding, or trees planted by individual homeowners, other public bodies, developers or businesses.
We don’t currently hold data on how many trees have been planted between April and December 2021, as this is only reported to us by the end of the financial year.
The GLA does not manage most of London's trees, which are usually the responsibility of the various site owners and managers. Trees in the public realm are mostly the responsibility of London's 32 boroughs, the City of London and TfL. You can find details of London’s boroughs here.
For information about the number of trees felled and planted by TfL, you should contact TfL’s Information Access Team at [email protected]
The GLA does manage Parliament Square Gardens. One tree was felled there in 2017 due to disease, and one replacement tree was planted in the same year.
