Summary of request

You requested

Earlier this week you did a interview with GB news (Chris Hope) where you mentioned that drivers of older non-compliant vehicles could be at risk whilst driving such vehicles (I assume you meant from fumes entering the cabin area)?

As a taxpayer and a member of the public can you please supply me with the data used to back up your comment?

There have been a number of scientific studies looking at air pollution exposure in vehicles, including exposure of people commuting by car and professional drivers. These studies have shown that people travelling in vehicles are among the highest exposed to pollution.

The GLA recently commissioned and published a report by leading air quality experts at Imperial College London that reviewed national and international studies on this topic.

The review looked at different methods of travel, as well as the levels of exposure experienced by people who work on and/or otherwise use the road. It concluded on page 10 that, while there are some physical changes that can be made to cars to reduce pollution levels within them to some extent, “ultimately, commutes via car still results in higher TRAP [transport related air-pollution] exposure than active travel...”. The review is published on the GLA website: In-vehicle exposure to traffic and road-generated air pollution | London City Hall
