Our response
As a strategic regional authority, the Greater London Authority (GLA) is responsible for setting the direction for London’s delivery of electric vehicle charge points, as set out in the Mayor’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy (EVIS), available here: Electric vehicles & charge points - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)
Transport for London (TfL) is London’s regional transport authority working to deliver the Mayor’s priorities as set out in EVIS, delivering charge points on TfL’s land. You may wish to contact them directly at [email protected].
The London boroughs are responsible for the delivery of charge points on their own land. The GLA itself is not directly responsible for the delivery of electric vehicle charge points in London and therefore does not hold all of the information in scope of your request. I would recommend you instead contact each of the London boroughs directly, who will be best placed to support you with your request.
We do not hold information on the number of EV charge points located within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) boundary, although the ULEZ boundary encompasses almost the entirety of the GLA area, and so the large majority of charge points in London will also be within the ULEZ boundary. The ULEZ boundary was specifically designed to provide opportunities for vehicles to divert from travelling into London, allowing drivers of non-compliant vehicles to avoid the Zone if they do not want to pay the ULEZ charge.
The data for the total number of electric vehicle charge points across London is publicly available. As of August 2024, Greater London had over 21,600 public charge points. Zap-Map provides the most up to date figure for the number of charge points in London, available here: EV charging statistics 2024 - Zapmap (zap-map.com)
The Department for Transport publish quarterly statistics on charger type and breakdown by borough, using Zap-Map data. The most recent data can be found here: Electric vehicle public charging infrastructure statistics: July 2024 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
