Stratford East

An east London institution, Stratford East has been hoisting performances since 1884! A loyal local audience and visitors from across the city pack out brilliant updates on the classics alongside new plays and musicals. Recent hits include The Women of Llanrumney, Animal Farm, Abigail's Party, and The Big Life.

As well as productions in the theatre, there is a bar with outdoor and indoor spaces and over the years free entertainment, including poetry, music and comedy. The bar has a restaurant where you can also get great Caribbean (Trinidadian) food. It’s a good place to meet socially or for work.

Access information

Access performances include BSL interpreted, Relaxed, Audio-Described (with Touch Tours offered in advance) and Captioned. Access bookers receive priority booking for shows. You can join their access mailing list to be the first to hear about new performances and any accessible events or tours. The venue is accessible to wheelchair users, assistance dogs are welcome and there is a Sennheiser tour guide system in place.

Travel to Stratford East

  • 5 mins from Stratford station (National Rail, Overground, DLR, Central and Jubilee lines). Level or step free access to all areas by lift or ramp.
  • Bus routes include 25, 69, 86, 97, 104, 108, 158, 238, 241, 257, 262, 276, 308, 339, 425, 473, D8, N8, N86. 

The Albany

Address: The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford, SE8 4AG

The Albany not only houses performances, dance classes, workshops and more, it’s a home to many local arts companies and charities. With a colourful café and garden, it’s worth a visit even if you don’t know what’s on.

Access information

A Relaxed venue, with a range of access enhanced performances including Audio Description, Captioning and BSL interpretation. Accessible to wheelchair users (there is a lift to the first floor) and welcoming to assistance animals. Free tickets offered to companions or personal assistants. Hearing loop available.

Travel to the Albany

  • 250m from Deptford Station (National Rail), 450m from New Cross Station (National Rail and Overground) and 700m from Deptford Bridge Station (DLR) – all have step-free access via lifts.
  • Bus routes include 171, 172, 177, 47, 53 and 453.

Bush Theatre

Bush Theatre, or 'The Bush’, has a huge international reputation and deservedly so. It has nurtured and grown some of the best emerging writers in the country. From deep drama to light comedy, you can be assured that the creatives behind every show are destined for big things.

Access information

Range of assisted performances including Relaxed & Chilled, Audio Described and Captioned. A hearing loop is available at all performances. Assistance dogs are welcome. The building has level access to all floors and performance spaces. Disabled patrons can access £5 off standard price tickets, with free tickets available for personal assistants/ access companions.

Travel to the Bush Theatre

  • The nearest tube station with step-free access is Shepherds Bush (Central line) station.
  • Shepherds Bush Rail Station is ten mins walk away (Overground – Mildmay). This has step-free access to all platforms, with the nearest National Rail station being Paddington, 15 mins away, with step free access.
  • Bus routes include 207, 260, 283, SL8 and N207 stop at Shepherds Bush Market (next door to the theatre).

National Theatre

Address: Upper Ground, South Bank, SE1 9PX 

It’s the National! Even if you’ve never visited, you may have seen a recording from their pioneering NT Live shows. The biggest stars in the world have graced its stage, from Lawrence Olivier to Judi Dench to Ncuti Gatwa. It’s actually three theatres, plus a huge foyer bar across several floors that you can pitch up to with your laptop. Every summer there’s free al fresco performances on the River Stage.

Access information

Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent visitors are encouraged to join their Access Scheme to receive info on access performances, have early booking for access tickets, book tickets and receive adjusted seat prices for themselves and a companion/PA.

Assisted performances include Audio Described, BSL Interpreted, Captioned, Chilled, Relaxed and Dementia-Friendly. Other support includes hearing enhancement headsets, a hearing loop system and smart caption glasses. Assistance animals welcomed. All the theatres have dedicated spaces for wheelchair users.

Travel to National Theatre

  • By tube: Waterloo (Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Water & City) is 500m away. Jubilee Line offers step-free access.
  • By train: Waterloo and Waterloo East (linked stations) both with step-free access although there are steep ramps to access the platforms in Waterloo East.
  • Bus routes include 1, 4, 26, 59, 68, 76, 139, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 243, 341, 521, X68 and Riverside Bus (RV1 – which also stops on Upper Ground which runs by the back of the National Theatre).

Battersea Arts Centre

Address: Battersea Arts Centre, Lavender Hill, SW11 5TN

Fifty years young, Battersea Arts Centre, or ‘BAC’, has been a home to extraordinary performance for decades. Expect edgy theatre, beautiful dance, and immersive shows for all the family. BAC is also a much-loved heart of the community, with many ways for people to get involved, from youth academies to a community garden. Battersea Arts Centre hosts events for Liberty 2025. 

Access information

A proactively inclusive venue, with step-free access on the ground floor and a lift to performance spaces on the first floor, welcoming to assistance animals. Chill-out space open to the public whenever the building is open. Access performances include Sensory Adapted Performances, BSL interpreted, Captioned, Audio Described (with Touch Tours). Familiarisation Tours are offered, and personal assistants/ companions are offered free tickets. 

Travel to the Battersea Arts Centre

  • 0.5 miles from Clapham Junction (step free access with lifts and ramps).
  • Clapham Common (Northern) and Stockwell (Victoria) are 15 min bus journey away (not step-free) – the 345 bus departs from both and stops outside Battersea Arts Centre.
  • Other bus routes include 77, 87, 156 and night buses N77 and N345.
