How will fraudulent claims be prevented?

We have rigorous requirements and checks in place to make sure that we prevent fraud, so that home improvements go to those who are most in need. These checks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Property checks: we will use the Land Registry to confirm that you are an owner-occupier or to verify the landlord, and other details
  • Benefits checks: once your application for the scheme has been received, RetrofitWorks, the organisation delivering the scheme, will submit relevant details to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If your application cannot be verified, RetrofitWorks will get in touch with you to obtain a copy of your benefits award letter(s)
  • Income and housing cost checks: you will be asked to provide evidence of income such as recent payslips and evidence of housing costs such as your tenancy agreement/mortgage statement and Council Tax bill

In the unlikely event of fraud, we will report and prosecute and will require that the cost of any improvements undertaken is repaid.
