Shaping London’s economic future

Background
The challenge
London has world-leading industries and attracts global talent and skills. In 2022, the capital contributed nearly a quarter of the UK’s total output despite only around 13% of the UK’s population living in the capital.
However, in recent years, our city has faced economic challenges and slow growth. This is due to factors such as:
- The cost-of-living crisis
- Brexit
- The COVID-19 pandemic
- Climate change
- Political instability.
To improve living standards, especially for low and middle-income households, London needs a new approach to economic growth.
In partnership with London Councils, the Mayor of London is working on a London Growth Plan.
The London Growth plan aims to:
- Help with the creation of good jobs
- Ensure Londoners from all communities can benefit from the city's growth
- Enhance and improve Londoners' skills so they're ready for well-paid, quality jobs
- Ensure all growth initiatives contribute to net zero.
