Donate contactless with Tap London

Have you heard of Tap London? It's a new way to donate £3 to homeless initiatives by tapping a contactless payment card.

What is the “Tap London” campaign? To help make it easier for Londoners to support homeless initiatives, City Hall has installed ‘Tap London’ devices across the city where you can donate £3 by tapping your contactless payment card or contactless payment device
.
You might see these ‘Tap London’ points dotted around the capital, see the map of locations here, and can tap your card or contactless device as often as you like

What do you think of this way of donating, and had you heard of this before? Is this a good or bad innovation to support rough sleepers? Would you use Tap London if you saw such a device? Why or why not?

Summary

Thanks everyone for joining in this discussion. We have shared your feedback with our colleagues in the Housing Team.

The Tap London donation points have raised over £64.000 so far. We'll keep you updated on the next steps.

Hardware O&M (operations & maintenance).

I think it is a good idea but I wouldn't use it because I donate regularly to Shelter and the Whitechapel Missionary

Also as you can buy card raders from many places on line how do we know any tap point is legitimate

Nice idea, but I won't flash my cards in the street, so it's a non starter as far as I'm concerned

Yes, I would be prepared to tap to donate, rather than put money directly into the hands of the increasing number of homeless people begging on the streets and on the transport system. This way I would have more confidence that the money is used constructively rather than spent on alcohol or drugs which can only perpetuate the problem.

I have heard of this being piloted elsewhere and I think it is an excellent idea. We're moving towards a cashless society and the homeless are a group that is affected negatively by this. I look forward to trying a tap!

Thanks everyone for joining in this discussion.

For those of you who asked if there were other ways or other amounts to donate, there are. All the money donated through this campaign will go direct to a coalition of 22 long-established homelessness charities - the London Homeless Charities Group – which between them help thousands of people each year. The donations will be divided equally between them, and will be spent on direct services in the capital to:

-  help new rough sleepers not to spend a second night out
-  help those living on the streets to leave them and not return
-  help to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place

To get involved in a different way, please have a look at this webpage.

I hadn't heard of this scheme.  The homeless problem is year round so money raised should be used to assist in getting them off the streets permanently not just Christmas and The New Year.

I think it’s a great idea as when I see a rough sleeper I feel I need to do something but wouldn’t give to them and it’s there was a contactless donation near by I would do that.

It’s a bandaid on an amputation.  These people’s lives have been turned upside down by a government and a system that doesn’t care. While it’s a fine idea, the onus is again on the public to fix the problem. And it doesn’t address the bigger - harder - picture. A crippled and broke social care system that has failed all of us.

I would prefer other means of making a donation. I don't like "contactless payments", mainly for security reasons.

Hi.

I dont think this is the best way to gain donations.

This type mean people would actively need to seek out donation points.

Much simpler idea would be to excercise card payment service in as many stores / petrol stations / etc around the capital.

- this includes a simple question ‘would you like to donate X (usually 20p/25p)

BP garages do this all over the country.

I asked one store owner about it - he said loads of people do it - and He gets approx 1000 per week.  Multiply that by the number of garages nation wide and you have a very sizeable donation coming in - on a regular basis.

Easy. Done.

Thanks.

It's a good way of alleviating the symptom of homelessness, even though the nearest place to tap is over 4 miles away from where I live in SE London.  But homelessness is so often just the symptom while the causes remain untouched.  That very British obsession with home ownership is very largely the cause.  Housing, particularly the balance between private (both owned and rented) and social, needs a thorough reevaluation.  Till then it's all just sticking plaster stuff.

Why £3? Why not £1? Much more likely to donate if I'm in control of the minimum amount.
