Reducing violent crime

We'd like your views on the new Violence Reduction Unit and what Londoners can do to help prevent violence.

Together with the Met Police and specialists in health, youth services and local government, City Hall has announced plans to establish a new Violence Reduction Unit. It aims to tackle the causes of violent crime, such as poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities. Alongside this, the Violent Crime Taskforce will continue its work to take knives and other weapons off the streets.

What do you think of the measures above? Do you think that it is important to bring together different services and involve communities when designing solutions to tackle violent crime?  What can Londoners, families and communities do to help prevent violence?

I think it is interesting that whosoever wrote the introduction seems to consider that, "poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities" are considered to be CAUSES of violent crime. Are the majority of those in poverty violent?. Do the wealthy not commit violent acts? Are the majority of those with poor mental health violent? Are not the majority of violent acts perpetrated by people considered to be of sound mental capacity?

I think it also interesting that the blurb does not mention education. Changing the attitude of those prone to act of violence is important and of course, it is important to remove weapons from our streets. The whole community to must play it part in this but changing the attitude and behaviour of those adults prone to acts of violence is a long term ambition - if it is achievable at all. The staring point for long term change is with the young. Good and consistent primary and secondary education with as much emphasis on social skills as academic subjects. Back this up with properly structured and supervised extra mural activity social opportunities for youths and we may make in-roads into changing behaviours and attitudes across all society.

White racist crime isn't even considered. If I explain that I have a man beneath me that stalk harasses me in ways that seem like torture (known by the older black or brown generations) this is seen as a joke. Although it's severe.

I have white residents who are allowed to stalk, malign my name, false report me, terrorise me are enabled by the likes of the police, leave racist signage around the building, use all forms of hate crime and harassment where even 'paid' harassment is used. Police stalking, measures to try to run me over or my family member is crime and severe abuse of power.

I think the government should consider the covert actions used by the police where constantly targeting black and youths needs to stop.

Not too long ago they had to challenge racist stop and searches, then trident/gang databases where Stafford Scott was targeted for speaking out.

I feel ground-lead communities and organisation run by specific groups need to be offered more access and resources to tackle certain issues rather keep assuming policing is the way forward.

The police in the UK are equally as racist as any other elsewhere. In the US they use all forms of measures to routinely corner black and ethnic kids and it is similar here.

The reality of opportunity for some is starting be understood as with the issue of molestation and those coming out of care as children.

Systemic racism has caused a lot of trauma and I feel nurture is a better way forward to address a lot of these ills.

Those abused in care often struggle to raise their voice and as seen from multiple examples cover ups often cause further issues for these kids to have their voices and experiences heard.

There's crime committed by seemingly good white folk but this is not the focus as much.

Where I live I've had to deal with serious, surreal, levels of harassment and crime by white residents. This also involves TFL staff, and a host of other white people, that needs to be addressed but never is. There's ruthless measures the police use to terrorise black and ethnic people and as a black female I know exactly the depths they go.

The residents I live around can harass me morning noon and night, are enabled with support by the police, LFB etc, and others associated, bump-locking my locks and routinely enter my home. This is crime that is not considered...

I agree that we need to tackle crime at the source. All to often this source is poverty, lack of education and lack of community. All available funding should be focused on preventing people from getting into a life of crime by supporting their development (by providing education/trade skills).

Additionally the police force in the UK has lost the trust of a lot of people (and rightly so). It is hard to see the lengths that the police force will go to to stop small petty crime, and the violence used against everyday men and women, whilst standing by when large corporations or wealthy individuals commit wage theft or tax fraud. Additionally when senior members of government openly break the law, it divides community’s when the same police force that harasses innocents on the street stands by and does nothing.

1) Establish the root cause of crime. This is largely known, albeit unpopular to talk about, and is contained in the statistics and the data you see.
2) Reintroduce the death pentalty. I'm sure when those selfish stabbists and drug dealers find themselves on the receiving end then behaviours will change.

Other than that (since lets face it, the above will NEVER happen), the easist solution to London's crime problem is leaving London.

Rape & Violent crime in general has increased since the introduction of internet pornography. Men get a reward for watching racist rape videos. What do you expect. Your hatred for women, only ends up harming yourself. We are human, you came from a woman. It is self harm. Humanity is coming to an end.

Bring back Joan Smith. Why have you removed female single sex toilets when rape is at the highest levels since records begin? 1 in 9 men admit to sexual assault. Conviction rates at their lowest 1.6%. In 1977 conviction rates were 32! Now, men can say 'sex game gone wrong' that's why. We have sexualised rape so much, many believe rape is sex.

Ban violent porn, look at the increase in rape against women & children since the introduction of internet porn. Why is sexual violence so high after lockdown, when every man has been watching loads. Young women & girls are groomed by porn into thinking violent sex is normal, listen to Billie Ellish. You cannot tackle violence when every man is watching violence to tickle his tackle.

Local communities in every Borough should have a 24/7 Centre that allows creativity, sports such as snooker, table tennis, environment friendly base, learning skills and a socialising environment that can reduce boredom. It is commonly known that when charitable and state provided community centres have shown that those less fortunate, low income families cannot afford their young youths to go places where they can learn and do physical activities in boredom. Boredom creates anti social behaviours, negative attitudes, crime and instabilities. We need new community centres opened, manned with food and charitable works to help aid this common problem for youngsters to relax and go places where they feel support, know people to talk to and guide them through course of life. London is the most expensive city in the world and requires a lot of self endurance, patience for youngsters to understand their stance in the environment they live in. Positive places can help aide postive behaviours, better outlook in youths and more a happier environment after schools.

A membership card run by the council for these community clubs for support, food and places to hang out is a great way for postive change with volunteers who aide communities, retirees and alike are able to support and have places for all to be able to talk out problems and make positive changes within them.

We need back community centres safe for all with aide of councils, volunteers, charities through a small membership fees which will fund these community centres with various support, sports and activities available for them.

Great idea. Give young people (and not only them) a safe, non judgemental space where they can hang out and have something to do .

Education education education firstly.
Secondly, ease of the economic burden from the families
Thirdly, police should take on more responsibility and more power to catch the culprit; they are just watching and ignoring the culprits.

Increase promotion of good citizenship, empower and reward good citizens. Increase powers to police and councils, (schools and Social Services) in all aspects enabling them to support in the the early stages, starting with non violent crime, which may mitigate proceeding to violent crime. If children see their law abiding family wronged without consequence this could lead to resentment etc and distrust for governance and promotion of crime above law abiding. See playing the system as negative manipulative behaviours and dont reward. Give weight and power to what is right, such as fair tenancy agreements, fair contracts, more opportunities for work and affordable housing, housing where families can live close and support one another, early support and intervention for struggling families..... all starts in the home. Promote an achievable 'good life' on a living wage. Show and advertise how a good life is lived on a minimum wage, how can engagement in society and achievement be reached on a minimum wage, and how that is attainable to disadvantaged individuals. Make the minimum wage life Instagram-able as thats a life which is in reach of citizens without criminal activity. Life styles out of reach, which are promoted as the good life could result in some seeing no way to attain it without crime/ violent crime in the pursuit of happiness. Rethink 'labelling/branding', what does this do to the identity of families, individuals, communities, good schools, bad schools, bad areas, good areas. Enable young adults to move out of the family home into a space on a minimum wage to grow, have responsibilities and have a family rather than the only non crime aspiration on a minimum wage is to start a relationship and family in a rented room which is often for working single professionals only in most adverts, which makes for a frustrated hopeless poorer society perhaps perceiving crime and drugs as a resolution and a way out.

Social sévices and the NHS shop funded to provide support the police are simply not qualified to provide

I think we need a very visible zero tolerance campaign against knife crime but obviously more police presence in areas of crime as otherwise youngsters Wint feel protected without carrying their own protection around i suppose. We also need to teach kids in school how to behave well, be tolerant and non reactive against people who don’t agree with us. We should try to tackle the root cause of knife crime.
We need more officers on the street and less dealing with bureaucracy. They need to be equipped with more powers as otherwise they are not taken seriously. They need to claim back their respect. There should be zero tolerance for injuring a police officer and this should be punished severely. I get the impression that crime is on the constant rise because nobody is afraid of the police or the justice system anymore. That is a very worrying status quo. I am always concerned every time my teenager goes into town to meet his mates as I feel he is in a realistic amount of danger, but I cannot keep him indoors forever. It is just very sad how much London has changed in twenty years.

As for zero tolerance, start by providing spaces for young people. Remember youth clubs? Remember leisure centres? Remember parks and open spaces? Remember sport? Try undoing the mess of austerity, providing those spaces, providing funding to the NHS and social services before trying to get the police to baton charge their way out the problem.

Agree with most of what has been said about education, gangs etc but shouldn't more be done to expose the wider community of users that have created the market and demand for drugs that the gangs are fighting over. Specifically about recreational users not addicts, why isn't there a media campaign to shame people into not using the drugs in the first place and thereafter the penalties for recreational users must be higher. The proliferation of cocaine use is staggering in London and a huge amount of it is recreational and more must be done to tackle this demand.
