In the Priorities for Londoners survey, you ranked safety as the 3rd most important issue facing the capital after housing and cost of living.  Many of you felt that it was important action is taken to reduce poverty and inequality in deprived areas; to create positive opportunities for young people; and to ensure a visible and responsive police presence.

Over the last three years:

  • The Mayor increased the annual resources of the police and fire services so that they are now £250 million higher than three years ago
  • City Hall established a Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and a series of programmes to combat crime and violence in the past year

This budget proposes:

  • Increased funding to ensure we have over 31,000 police officers in the capital – returning police numbers to the level they were in 2016, before they fell to a low of 29,900 in 2018
  • Increasing the VRU’s budget from £1.8 million to £5 million in 2020-21 and subsequent years. The VRU takes a preventative approach to tackling violent crime; exploring the factors that might lead to criminal behaviour and focusing attention and resources on what makes a difference
  • Continuing funding to the Young Londoners Fund (YLF), with 56,000 young people participating in activities funded by the YLF by the end of 2022-23. The YLF provides support and activities for children and young people aged ten to 21, to help them make positive choices and reach their potential
  • Increases in funding for the London Fire Brigade to ensure fire engines continue to arrive at emergency incidents within their targets
  • Committing to providing the funding necessary for the Brigade to implement the recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry

Tell us what you think of the spending plans for policing and safety in the discussion below.

Any changes will be merely superficial without real change whwere it is needed - at the top of the Met.  We need a Commissioner who has a less bureaucratic and box tickling approach and also engages with and identifies with local communities, especially in areas which have more than their fair share of crime and anti-social behaviour.  Ability and temperamental suitability should be the criteria for the role.

The funding sounds sensible, but please consider even more support for young people. As you know, this money is preventattive in crime terms and money spent here saves the police money in the long run.

Please do not spend more money monitoring protest groups – people like Extinction Rebellion might be inconvienient  but they simply do not represent good money spent on keeping London safe.

Stop blaming politics and take responsibility for reducing violent knife crime. That should be the main priority of the mayor. The rise in attacks and muggings on teenagers in Queen's Park/Kilburn is shocking - almost the norm now. Kids with knives attack others in broad daylight on busy roads infront of CCTV camera and never get caught. My friend's 13 year old son was beaten and really clicked about in December right infront of a pub cctv. Police didn't even bother to look at the footage and closed his case the next day. After talking  to parents in local streets around where we live it has become apparent that most attacks have been done by boys matching v similar descriptions - if locals know who they are why don't the police? No effort seems to go into catching anyone - today a local man was attacked by 7 guys one of whom had a knife. They had previously attacked somebody the same afternoon and been let off with a caution despite having a knife with them. Whey then then attacked him the police arrived quickly  but let them off with a caution. Why? It should  be a source of eternal shame to those in the mayoralty and met police that this is happening - get tough and do something so that these criminal are held to account - both for those that they terrorise and for themselves so that they can possibly get a fresh start in their lives too before they become inured into a life of utter violence. Too many children have been killed or attacked with knives - solve this, get the police to be accountable for their actions too and penalised for their inaction - and it will have an impact on overall crime.

Two 13year old boys were mugged on my street in Clapham at 5pm last week, practically in broad daylight.  Although I understand the stance of schools who tell our young people, to simply hand over anything they are asked for, to keep themselves safe, this is practically a license to steal.  How easy must it be for those who do this when there is no visible police presence and very little chance of getting caught.

Quite simply - employ more police officers, get them out on the streets, and stop shutting police stations.  It is the sign of a civilsed society when you can walk the streets without looking behind you all the time.

I haven't seen a police officer in the area where I live for a long time. The nearest police stations remaining open now are in what seem to me quite remote areas of the capital, it would take some time to get to them by public transport. The lack of police resources has resulted in  a situation that is worrying, and frightening for ordinary people.

There needs to be a visible police presence in residential areas to deter criminals and reassure people, who feel increasingly vulnerable to criminal activity. Local police stations need to be re-opened and manned to allow people to report crimes or suspicious activity to police in person, rather than as a remote presence online.

My partner was mugged last year around the corner from our flat in Kilburn.  The police who responded were brilliant, but follow up was very slow due to resourcing and realising the incredibly large area they have to be responsible for.  The line up didn't happen for almost a year and by then, not surprisingly, no one got the clear result that was needed.  Those responsible were clearly locals - we spotted them several other times in the months that followed but there was no way to get police there fast enough.  We need more police on the streets in NW6 regularly and more community outreach for all residents.

Not happy with the police presence in Willesden Green, hardly see any officer on the streets and it feels unsafe to arrive late evening home. Have been robbed once on way home and nothing was done about it. Wembley police station gets terrible reviews and people are scared to even go there to report a crime. It is disgraceful. Is anyone reviewing polie officers or sttiosn that are not doing their job?? I doubt it.

I had twice written and complained about  police misconduct but never receieved a reply. No system in place that improves this institution in real terms, maybe on papers, but it does no work. Please look into this as otherwise there is no trust in the police.

The stabbings must also be stopped! Whatever needs to be don, mor police powers? More cultural community places for youth to keep them out of trouble...? whatever reason there is , we need to tackle the causes of this new awful epidemic of vile cime.

The CPS and Courts need to be made more accountable for their decisions.  They thwart the police action in many cases.

Much needed increase to funds to target Violence Reduction. It is imperative that we can communicate the importance of life, the consequences of actions, the reduction in a gang mentality and safer streets. Is this enough?

Closure of police stations, reduction in spending and recruitment has led to increased crime in all areas, I personally have been a victim of a crime 4 times in the last 3 years with no support from local authority or the police. Apparently as long as you have 'insurance to cover your loss' seems to be the norm!

I'm interested to know why you have closed all my local Police Stations. Where should I go if I need to visit? With all the Police Stations closed, where will the thousands of new policemen go? I watched a video at a Police crime prevention event in Ruislip on Saturday, it showed burglars entering a house and the alarm sounding. The burglars simply ignored it and carried on steeling and getting away. We were told that the police only really get involved if there's CCTV, which relies on home owners. If I ring 999 will anyone come? The police are aware of the drug dealing that goes on by Ruislip Woods yet do nothing about it.

I do not feel safe in London any of the time.  We need more Police on the streets and better street lighting - our street lighting has been significantly reduced and when walking home it is quite dark which does not feel safe.  Also it does not feel safe due to the increased number of people ie as poorer parts of the town are suffering from overcrowding because of the new homes being built in every space possible.  These areas need a visible Police front where residents feel safe.  Furthermore the drug dealers in the area can be spotted a mile off but nothing is done about them and especially those smoking cannabis ( you cannot ignore the smell) who do it in blatant sight of the Police.

Hi all. I live in Chingford and for the last 3 years things are getting worse and worse here aslo regarding safety crime. Old people getting robbed nad killed, cars and house are getting broken into.,fight on streets and fight between drivers are very common now. More and more police PLEASE - day and night. I have 2 kids and my wife is scared to take to the parks also - drug dealers and  problem looking people everywhere. Too many people on universal credit - and I know for a fact that many of those people dont deserve that credit. Please more police and more strictly on the benefits.
