Policing and safety
Have your say on the proposed spending plans for policing and safety in this year's Budget 2020-21.
In the Priorities for Londoners survey, you ranked safety as the 3rd most important issue facing the capital after housing and cost of living. Many of you felt that it was important action is taken to reduce poverty and inequality in deprived areas; to create positive opportunities for young people; and to ensure a visible and responsive police presence.
Over the last three years:
- The Mayor increased the annual resources of the police and fire services so that they are now £250 million higher than three years ago
- City Hall established a Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and a series of programmes to combat crime and violence in the past year
This budget proposes:
- Increased funding to ensure we have over 31,000 police officers in the capital – returning police numbers to the level they were in 2016, before they fell to a low of 29,900 in 2018
- Increasing the VRU’s budget from £1.8 million to £5 million in 2020-21 and subsequent years. The VRU takes a preventative approach to tackling violent crime; exploring the factors that might lead to criminal behaviour and focusing attention and resources on what makes a difference
- Continuing funding to the Young Londoners Fund (YLF), with 56,000 young people participating in activities funded by the YLF by the end of 2022-23. The YLF provides support and activities for children and young people aged ten to 21, to help them make positive choices and reach their potential
- Increases in funding for the London Fire Brigade to ensure fire engines continue to arrive at emergency incidents within their targets
- Committing to providing the funding necessary for the Brigade to implement the recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry
Tell us what you think of the spending plans for policing and safety in the discussion below.

Show full commentThe police are making it hard to support them. We all know they are under funded and short on man power. What does not make it easy is when a Son gets attacked last January and it has not been dealt with. The TDC who is supposed to be dealing with it does not contact you since July 2019 when statements had still not been taken. An email is only sent after a local councillor, MP, Borough Commander are contacted and an IOPC complaint are done. I am not talking about a minor assault but being stomped and kicked whilst on the ground causing a minor brain injury plus other injuries. We need to have an independent body that consists of the residents of the local areas to hold them accountable. Due to the delays and lack of collecting evidence (I had to go knocking on doors asking for CCTV or witnesses) the thugs will go on to be involved in further violent crimes. If they are dealt with at the time and whilst still at school this may deter them from that path.
Today I was told it has been passed to the CMT- Crime Management Team to decide if there is a case to be be put to the CPS. Think I already know the answer to that!
More funding will only be of use if it used wisely and they get the communities involved in helping to make our streets safe. In my area you can not walk around with out smelling drugs being smoked. This can be from passers by, cars or homes. Not enough is being done to sort out the low level drug use which can lead to further problems. You can see the deals being done on street corners or people waiting for a car or bike to arrive with their order. The police have been informed of where there are regular deliveries but they continue.

Been involved with Policing since 2009. This is not a recent reaction to austerity. But lack of Council community officers pcsos on bikes has lead to chaos in some areas and severe decay in most parks Please fund mopeds for SNT Teams. Big ask but could work. Discussed this with officers who agree.

Show full commentOur street has become a second home to drug dealers. Pre-arranged pick ups are made routinely on the street corner, in the street and at times immediately outside of my home UB1 3DU. I have two little children and I am extremely worried for their safety and the type of environment they are in. Despite reporting to police many times they have done nothing. My neighbors have witnessed the same and advise me not to confront the dealers.
I have reported the matter to the police but they have done nothing. Even the local MP who lives on the same street has not been able to do anything. I would like to know what difference the so called EXTRA POLICE spending will make to my area and how much if anything has been earmarked for Southall, Middlesex specifically to target the Drug related crime that is now riddling our streets.

I have been living there for 1 year now and on my block and I have experienced:
a) a car violently caught fire and exploded at the front of my house 4am, I woke up from the tires' smell. (no casualties)
b) fire with one dead at the council flats across the road on the ground floor building next to the Isle of Dogs pumping station. It was a malicious act and not an accident and it was never reported in the news nor were we informed if the wrongdoers were caught.
c) people constantly smoke substances on the street and gather in dozens, I am scared to go to the grocery store.
d) cars with the drivers park outside of my house and stay there for ages with their engine on gather in dozens smoking substances.
e) laughing gas empty capsules are on the street constantly.
Please do something and cascade to the Tower Hamlets Council, cause this is unacceptable and under no circumstances, I would like to accept that as the norm of what London is these days. Absolutely disgusting.
Thank you.

Show full commentCommunity Policing London appears to collapsed. For most Estates the police are an occupying force only seen en mass. We need to rebuild contact with local communities via Special Constables and other volunteers, including police cadets, drawn from them. Where is there any material on how to become a Metropolitan Police special constable or Police Cadet or on volunteering opportunities? The on-links that I have been trying lead nowhere or do not work. Why has the Met not implemented the 2011 changes to allow previously barred groups (e.g. military reservists, medical and security professionals and youth workers) to volunteer, subject to sensible conditions? Other forces have devolved many reporting, victim support and liaison roles (including mental health escorting which takes up so much police time) to trained and experienced volunteers. Why has the Met apparently no processes for doing so? I am looking (Norwood Community Safety Partnership) to promote work experience and volunteering with the police among local schools and youth groups. I can find NO website with any information. This makes it very hard to help our local police youth and schools liaison officers. How can I help? P.S. I am well aware of the governance and probity issues involved with the questions above but other forces have found ways of addressing them.

Show full commentThe CPS desperately needs funding, too. The courts system is underfunded and barristers went on strike a while ago and it was barely covered by the press. I went into a police station this week and the building looked condemned - hazardous warning tape covering window cracks, broken vending machines, abandoned mugs in random cubbyholes. It's not open to the public, but police officers deserve a safe and comfortable environment to work in.
We need to make the knife crime epidemic focussed on solutions and a healthcare issue, as they successfully did in Glasgow. And decriminalise drugs, as they successfully did in Portugal, to help with the cocaine crisis.

Show full commentI don't think the increase in funding for the police is anyway near what is needed. Surprised if I don't read of a stabbing almost every day, sick to death of the burglary locally, the lack of police stations and the lack of police presence on the streets. With the reporting online half the smaller crimes aren't reported as it is time consuming and too much hassle for people to deal with. I've waited seven months for an incident I reported apart from an email asking if I wanted to continue with it, this is not acceptable. There is drug dealing openly on the streets and petty crime is rife as people think they can get away with it nowadays. London is not a nice city to live in any more.

Over the last few years the team has often been under strength and has lost its local office. Although access to a car has been requested many times there is no sign of a permanent solution, bikes have also been suggested but that has not happened either . We are fortunate to have a reasonable Neighborhood Watch and access to OWL (online watch) and our biggest problem is housebreaking.

Further, the police are too busy dealing with fake rape claims, with a third of their budget being for 'Domestic abuse', meanwhile drug dealers openly deal (e.g. in Brixton) with the poor addicts suffering. This backlash from the Jimmy Saville days needs to be reversed, it is wasting police time.
How about more contraception in the areas were people over breed?
We all know the real cause of crime is unloved children, usually without fathers or too many siblings for parents to raise properly.
Some kind of free of cheap condom machines (with larger sizes for better comfort) would stop people having unwanted children who become criminals.
Further, can police please crack down on these stolen Santander Cycles? It's a gateway to crime, in Brixton every group of teenagers has a stolen hire bike, but the police don't take action. They will go onto bigger crime.
Anonymous - account deleted
Community Member 5 years agoForget wasting police time on stolen hire bikes. The police have more important crimes to tackle. The companies that run the hire bike schemes will suffer losses and hopefully they'll stop littering our streets with so many hire bikes.

Most London citizens I speak to consider that minor crime, especially burglary, are just not policed or prosecuted. I hear stories of burglary where strong evidence such as CCTV footage are presented to the police but nothing is done. Major crime roots from minor crime and criminals feel untouchable in areas such as burglary. Police and CPS urgently need to get a grip on this.

He fought to keep funding these numbers under a Labour and then a Conservative Government, but the numbers have fallen to the current low levels under Mayor Khan. NOW he tells us he is returning police numbers to the previous levels which is an admission of how badly policing has been managed since 2016 when he became mayor.
