Green success story: James's story
On this page you can find out how the Mayor's Skill Academies Hubs have helped people to find rewarding new careers in the green industries.
Learner story: James
Hub: Capital City College Group
James was referred to the Hub from a training provider. He met with one of our Jobs and Career Advisors who took his details and briefly explained what CCC could offer. Shortly afterwards, James was contacted by a member of staff who provided him with in-depth details about the support we could offer, as well as establishing any areas of need.
James wanted support with employability, such as job searching and mock interviews, as well as upskilling in green skills, as he was very keen on sustainability. He also wanted to account for the gap in his CV and receive insightful knowledge from potential employers.
How the Hub helped
James's CV was created from scratch, and he was given insight into areas such as CV creation (e.g., what things to look out for) as well as relevant transferable skills. He also had an opportunity to meet with an employer. The employer gave an in-depth presentation about career pathways and how to tap into the hidden job market. James was also given links to entry-level green jobs. He was also referred to and attended our green course (Understanding Domestic Retrofit Level 2) for six weeks, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

James was also provided with information and support for areas such as cover letters and job searching. Regular one-to-one meetings were held throughout, offering guidance in areas such as how to target the job market. We highlighted transferable skills and how to apply these on James's CV as well as in interviews. This has helped James become very confident in interviews.
Outcomes
James has been supported throughout in areas like CV creation, job search, and confidence building. Potential jobs as well as apprenticeship opportunities were emailed to him. James contacted an organisation called Step Ahead, and they secured him a role: 16 hours as a customer service representative in a retrofit project. James is very happy with the service and delighted that he got a job after many months of being unemployed.
