Why talk about gas?
We consider gas as the next frontier in the energy transition debate – and some of the transition questions are more complex than those of other fossil fuels. Gas is strongly embedded in geopolitical relationships, used across many sectors in the economy – not only electricity generation – and associated infrastructures have lifetimes long beyond the 2050 time horizon.
At the same time, the recent conversation in the EU has moved significantly with the industry on actively debating how to decarbonise the gas sector. This opens the space to look at the topic more globally. A conversation bringing a broader sector of actors together to explore transition politics is timely.
This mini-workshop will discuss:
- gas and sustainable finance - next frontier for multilateral development banks
- coal-to-gas or coal-to-renewables in developing countries: What have we learned from the coal transition?
- global perspectives on political entanglement of the gas sector - eg, perspectives from Bangladesh, Mozambique and Latin America (tbc)
