The climate and ecological emergency emergency has placed the role of the courts in sharper focus.
In recent years, courts have become a lightning rod for action on climate change, air pollution, environmental degradation, land rights and related issues. Citing failure by the authorities, increasing numbers of individuals and communities are taking their grievances to the courts for redress.
This international event looks at the cutting edge of jurisprudence and adjudication in this vital field through the experience of prominent judges and others involved directly in landmark judgements on climate change and air pollution from Pakistan, Brazil and India. It also examines the implications of rising reliance on the courts (including Green Courts) for redress in terms of capacity building and training of judges and legal professionals through the pioneering efforts of bodies, such as the Asian Development Bank, in addressing institutional and professional development challenges.
