Olympic stadium Hammers public purse

Created on
14 July 2015

This meeting took place on 15 July 2015. Read the transcript for the first section here, the second section here and the third section here.

The Olympic stadium was estimated to cost £250 million in 2004. The price tag today is £700 million.

West Ham will pay £15 million to move in and take over the stadium but it is only paying a reported £2.5m in annual rent.

Who else will be using the stadium when West Ham takes up its new home? How much of the funding for the stadium transformation is coming from the public purse? Will the contract lock taxpayers into a reported 99-year deal? And what happens if visitor numbers don’t hold up?

The following guests will give evidence to the London Assembly Budget Monitoring Sub-Committee from 3pm:

David Goldstone CBE, Chief Executive, London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC)

Gerry Murphy, Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, LLDC

Also at the meeting – Transport for London will be quizzed on the costs and delays of the failed Bombardier signalling contract now that a new contractor is in place for the Sub-Surface Underground Upgrade programme.

A representative from the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) will also be questioned about LFEPA’s financial outturn for 2014/15.

The meeting will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 15 July starting from 2.00pm in Committee Room 5, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
