Mayor of London statement in response to PM launch of booster drive

Created on
13 December 2021

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Cases of the Omicron variant are rising sharply and with so much at stake, it is crucial that we act now to safeguard the public and help reduce pressure on NHS services. The Government’s new national campaign to offer all adults a booster jab by the end of the month is welcome. Londoners will see opening hours for vaccine centres extended, more pop-up sites coming online, and I will use all of our resources at City Hall to assist and ensure that all of London’s communities are encouraged to take us this lifesaving vaccine.

“The vaccine roll-out has already been an incredible success, with almost 15 million doses of the life-saving vaccines delivered in London – a remarkable achievement. As a global city we have led the way in what has been the biggest ever rollout of the vaccine our capital and country has ever seen. The weeks ahead are going to require yet another extraordinary effort from the NHS staff, volunteers, partners and community groups who have been such a key part of its success, and I want to pay tribute to everyone involved for their phenomenal efforts.

“Vaccines are our best defence against the virus – and the booster offers vital extra protection against this rapidly spreading variant. If you have not had your jabs, you are more likely to get COVID-19, or spread it to loved ones. So please don’t wait - come forward to get your vaccine or booster. It is never too late - and will save lives.”
