Created on
12 November 2021

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, Chairman of the London Assembly, Andrew Boff and Chair of the City Hall Branch of the Royal British Legion, Len Duvall OBE joined Assembly Members, representatives of the British Armed Forces and other special guests for a Remembrance Service at Southwark Cathedral today.

The service took place following Armistice Day on Thursday and marked 77 years since the Normandy landings and 100 years of the Royal British Legion.

The Very Reverend, Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark, led the prayers and gave the address.

Members of the armed forces as well as veterans, faith leaders, politicians and representatives from Metropolitan Police Service, Transport for London, London Ambulance Service and the Royal British Legion were in attendance.

The service included prayers by representatives of the Sikh, Hindu, Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths, as well as a series of readings and hymns, with music performed by the London International Gospel choir. A poem was read by Honorary Alderman Frances Blois, Vice President of the City Hall branch of The Royal British Legion.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I am truly humbled by the brave sacrifices of our armed forces. Their heroism made the precious freedoms we enjoy every day possible.

“We are in their debt and it is a true privilege to come together, stop, remember and honour those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

“This Remembrance Day, we reflect on the incredible courage of the service men and women who have worked to keep us safe and remember to never take for granted those who continue to protect our way of life.”

Chairman of the London Assembly, Andrew Boff AM said: “This year, it’s even more important that we remember the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth. During a global pandemic we relied on their dedication and commitment to help us through some very tough times.

“We also recognise 100 years of the Royal British Legion supporting the armed forces community. Their untiring dedication to Poppy Day is inspirational.

“Remembrance Day is a day to reflect on what our lives would be like without the enormous sacrifices made for our freedoms by some very brave people. We will be forever in their debt.”
